How to print and assemble a PDF pattern

Our patterns are adapted for home printers and their format fit both Letter (USA, Canada & Mexico) and A4 (Rest of the world) paper size. Follow these step by step instructions and you are good to go!

Print the pattern
1- Open the file in a PDF viewer such as "Acrobat Reader".

2- In the section 1 “print the pattern” of the document, select and copy (CTRL+C) the pages numbers (including dashes and commas) indicated, according to what you wish to print (Eg. pattern only, pattern + instructions...).

We always recommend to print the test square first. This square has specific dimensions and needs to be measured on the paper to ensure that the prints are in the right scale.
If working with knits, note that the pattern will be adjusted to a certain degree of elasticity. To ensure that your knit is suitable for this specific pattern, follow the instructions included with the stretch gauge. The stretch gauge is situated right below the test square.
3- Hit CTRL+P or click on the print icon in the top tool bar or go to "File" drop down menu and then choose "Print".

4- A print dialogue box will open. In the "Pages to print" section, paste (CTRL+V) the pages you wish to print (do not forget dashes and commas).

5- Ensure that “Actual size” option is ticked and that your printer is set for Letter (Canada, USA and Mexico) or A4 (Rest of the world) paper size. The layout of the document is formatted in order to fit both format. You can verify or modify the paper format by clicking on “Properties” button.

If you are unsure what your paper format is, check on the packaging or measure a sheet. Compare these measurements with the ones indicated below:

  • Letter: 215.9 mm x 279.4 mm (8.5 by 11 inches)
  • A4: 210 mm x 297 mm (8.27 by 11.7 inches)

When printing in A4 format, you'll notice a large margin on top and bottom of the sheet. This is normal because the text area is formatted to fit also LETTER format, which is shorter and wider than A4!

Assemble the pattern
Once you have printed the pattern, follow these instructions below to assemble it. Have some paper scissors and clear adhesive tape to hand.

1- Make a pile with the pattern sheets, arranging them by ascending numbers (smallest number on the top).

2- Start by taping together the first two pages on the pile: cut one side margin at the matching edges, along the dashed grey line. Then overlap and tape together. Do not leave any gaps between the sheets.

3- Tape the next sheet, on the top of the pile, and carry on until you get to the end of the first row, which means until you reach a page with no matching edge on the right (each matching edge is indicated with a grey half-circle).

4- Repeat steps 1 and 2, until there are no more sheet left.

5- Assemble each row together. Use the number at the bottom to ensure that rows are placed in order. The sequence starts at the top, from left to right.

The pattern is now ready to use. Once a size is chosen, cut directly in the pattern or retrace it on another layer of patternmaking paper. Use the legend page (on the same page as the test square) to identify your size outline.

Tip! Silk paper rolls are cheap and very useful when copying a pattern They are very see through and can be placed above the pattern to retrace the pieces. No tracing wheel needed!

Kraft paper rolls are also another good option. They can be found in the shipping supply section of any stationary or office supplies store. Kraft paper is not see through so you will need to lay the pattern on top of the paper and then run over the outlines with a tracing wheel. Ensure to protect the work surface when working with a tracing wheel.
